Adopt Your Next Pet

Adopt Your Next Pet

My husband and I welcomed our fur baby into our lives March of 2012. Like a lot of young couples, getting a dog was the next step in being a responsible adult. Of course after successfully keeping a handful of house plants alive for a year.

We adopted Ruby from a wonderful organization in Washington, DC called Oldies But Goodies, a rescue for cocker spaniels. We were told that you can gauge the time it might take for your dog to fully acclimate to his/her home in threes: three days, three weeks, three months. The first three days were as expected – a shy, careful dog that didn’t have much of an appetite. But well before week three, she was starting to show her true colors – a playful pup that loved destroying squeak toys and going on long walks. When three months rolled around, it might as well have been three years. The “no pets on the furniture” rule was a joke and our weekends were planned around what fun activities we could involve our dog in. Adopting Ruby was, and still is, one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

If you are ready to take that step my husband and I did three years ago, or just want to learn more about adopting a pet, head over to the Audubon Nature Center Saturday July 18th between 10am and 2pm. The Audubon Society will be hosting the Humane Society of the South Platte Valley mobile adoption unit so Roxborough residents can visit adoptable pets. Visitors can also learn about the importance of keeping cats indoors to help protect wild birds and ways you can protect your pets from local wildlife. Chatfield State Park rangers will also be there sharing information about their spacious Dog Off-Leash Area and Riley’s Natural Pet Supply will be teaching pet owners and potential pet owners about healthy animal nutrition.

After the event, take advantage of the area by walking you and your pet around the serene ponds behind the Audubon Nature Center – keep an eye out for all the wonderful wildlife. Remember to keep your pets on leash at all times.
